1 hour to half a day:
| a swim at Jungle Retreat, or Jungle Hut, or Jungle Jeff’s |
| a drive or walk up to the temple hill at Thotalingi. There is a great view from up here. |
| a walk up the path hill track towards Sholur Village. Though it is a 4hour hike up to Sholur – and about 6 hours to Ooty it is worth a wander up this path for shorter walks. The bamboo forest and streams just 10 minutes away beautiful and a 2 hour walk gets you to some great views and more lovely streams. |
| a drive along the Singara road from Masinagudi takes you to a great spot for swimming in the fast flowing stream (this is the outflow water from the Singara hydro electric power station – on its way to Moyer where it falls another 500m or so to turn the turbines of the Moyer power station) |
| a twenty minute drive to Tepakadu takes you into the Mudumalai wild life park. Here you can go on your pre-booked elephant ride (morning or evenings)
|
Full Day or Overnight
| a day out in Ooty. The drive up the Sigur Ghat road is spectacular -
rising 1km in altitude in 10km of road! It will take about an hour to get to
Ooty where there is more choice in shops plus such exciting things as
"the flower show" (100,000 tourists and a few flowers - at
the end of May), or "the dog show" (again in May) - the
"Assembly Rooms" Cinema plus more. The real beauty of the Nilgiri
Hills however is away from Ooty - recommended drives with a picnic
include: |
| a "Tea-Garden Tour" is: Ooty - Lovedale - on towards
Kundah - before Kundah take the road back to Coonoor - from Coonoor either
directly back to Ooty or a longer route back to Ooty via the Kotagiri road.
(total drive time 2 or 3 hours and roads are well surfaced) |
| a "Wilder Nilgiris Tour" is: Parsons Valley (via Ooty rubbish
dump - an ugly though spectacular scene/smell) From Parsons Valley dam
you can drive on the 5 km below the dam to the other side (unless you are
lucky and someone lets you drive across) and then on to Portimund Colony -
and the beautiful valley at "Krotha Halla" (road to right just
before Portimund Colony and about 1km after the end of the surfaced road at
the temple) - there is a good chance of seeing wildlife in theis valley -
especially if you decide to camp the night. With 4 wheel drive it is
possible to drive on across the river and over the hill to Mukerti
Reservoir. |
